Californication Season 1 Episode 7 “Girls, Interrupted”

Review:

“Girls, Interrupted” started off with Hank and Becca talking. Becca explains to Hank that she does not believe in happy endings. This bothers Hanks, especially since he learns that he’s partly to blame for her thinking because of his failed relationship with Karen. Becca asks him if its possible the two could get back together, and Hank says that it’s possible.

Hank then confronts Karen and tells her to stop telling Becca to not believe in happy endings. Karen tells Hank that the only time she doesn’t believe in happy endings is when it involves her and Hank.

Marcy teases Charlie about his obsession with S&M. Charlie retorts by telling Marcy to tell him one of her sexual desires. He tells her he can handle it. Marcy tells him she wants to have sex with a girl. Charlie’s response was funny. Marcy tells him that if she did it, she would want to include him.

Hank and Charlie go to dinner together, only to be joined by Todd Carr. Hank and Todd go back and forth; despite Todd telling Hank he has no problem with him. Todd reveals that he wanted to work with Hank again because “when you’re not wallowing in self-despair you’re the rarest thing this town has to offer”. Despite the nice compliment Hank chooses to insult Todd instead, resulting in Todd leaving.

Charlie goes into his office and sees Marcy and Dani chatting. Marcy then reveals that she and Dani were talking about Charlie and Marcy’s sex life and decided to have a threesome. However, Charlie not surprisingly opposes the idea. He wants Marcy to pick someone else. I like the line from Charlie to Marcy “Are you out of your fucking mind?”

Hank and Karen go to Todd Carr’s house, where Todd offers a job to Karen as an architect. She happily takes the job. Karen then thanks Hank for helping her to get the job. She then suggests that they go out to celebrate. Hank instead asks Karen to invite him over, telling her he’d be willingly to cook for her and Becca. She seems to agree, after he reminds her of the good times they shared, and telling her that he knows what she likes. “Just like you love fucked up architecture like this and David Hockney and gigantic fucking earrings, and the complete and utter cliché of driving west on Mulholland at sunset.” Hank has some of the best quotes on the show.

Charlie and Marcy get ready for Dani to come over. Charlie continues to express his opposition to a threesome with Dani.  He also worries that if they go through with it, they won’t be the same as a couple. I liked Marcy’s response “I thought same was the problem.” The doorbell rings and Marcy asks Charlie whether he wants to get it or should she.

Hank is seen cooking dinner as the phone begins to ring. It’s Mia, what a surprise. She’s apparently in trouble again, and needs Hank’s help. Thankfully, Hank does not believe her this time, and ends up hanging up on her.

Marcy and Dani are seen undressing and feeling each other up as Charlie looks on. The two get a little bit to into each other for Charlie’s liking and he offers to join them. Marcy has trouble coming up with an idea to include Charlie.

The planned dinner with Karen and Becca is put on hold, as Karen and Hank have to go save Mia. This is the second time she’s ruined Hank’s plans to spend time with Karen and Becca, and Becca is justifiably upset.

Back at Charlie’s house, Marcy and Dani kiss and feel up Charlie. Dani then pulls out a nipple clamp and tells Marcy to use it however she wants. However, everything goes wrong, as Marcy places it on Charlie’s chest, only to stand up jerking on it after it becomes stuck on her underwear, causing him to scream in pain. This part was really funny, and painful.

Hank and Karen go to Mr. Lowry’s house to get Mia. This guy is becoming way too common on the show; I have no idea why no one has reported him to the police yet. Mia is out of it, after taking 2 pills of Valium. Mia wakes up for a moment only to tell Hank she’s glad he came, which causes Karen to become suspicious of him. Lowry has no sympathy for Mia, and I’m glad Karen called him on that. “You think this is funny? This is someone’s child you asshole!”

Back at the hospital Marcy questions how Charlie and her got to the point of having to come up with new ideas for sex. Charlie is still angry and tells Marcy he thinks she and Dani wanted to punish him. She tells him she didn’t, but does question why Dani would want to hurt Charlie. Instead of coming clean about his affair, Charlie instead tells Marcy that it’s because he’s Dani’s boss and he makes her do humiliating things.

Hank returns to Karen’s house, and Karen debates telling Bill about what happened to Mia. Hank tells her the situation with Mia’s teacher may not be what it seems. After teasing him about being a pervert himself, she then asks him if he wants to tuck Becca in.

Hank apologizes to Becca for not having dinner with her, and promises to make it up to her. She tells him she forgives him, and says that she knows he doesn’t mean to mess up, but he always does. That’s a sad thing for a parent to hear, I’m sure.  I liked the quote from her, “you know its all well in good to talk about happy endings but if a person can’t deliver, if he keeps screwing up, well eventually I guess you kinda gotta say fuck you.”

This was an ok episode. I did enjoy how it started off with the concept of “happy endings” with Hank and Becca and ended with her bringing it up again. I’m beginning to like Charlie; he’s a good comic relief character. Dani, his secretary is very weird, I wonder what her and Charlie’s relationship is going to be like now, especially since she was definitely taking pleasure in seeing Charlie writhe in pain. One problem I do have with the show so far is that it always seems to end with Hank and Becca. I get that he cares about Karen and her, and I understand he wants to be back with them, but the show seems to reiterate this every episode. Either it’s going to happen or it won’t, but the show does not need to keep harping on this every episode, in my opinion.  The endings also seem really tame so far; I’m really hoping something shocking ends up happening soon. I’ve come to learn that Mia is not only evil and deceptive but also really messed up, I’m hoping they get her help, between her obsession with Hank and her drug addiction she clearly needs some kind of counseling or rehab.
